NightWatch: Web URL Blocker
Description
There has been a large focus from software companies to improve the effectiveness of advertisements, increase user engagement to levels that border on addiction, and occupy space in all of our minds long after we have stopped using the software. NightWatch is a web browser extension that blocks specific URLs instead of entire websites. Current “productivity” and “focus” blockers aim to block entire websites, which is much easier to do than targeting specific URLs, but can actually reduce productivity and harm their own usefulness by blocking content aggregation and social media sites like Reddit and Facebook.
By blocking only the specified URLs, users are able to block any and all links that bother them, such as front pages and timelines, while allowing access to businesses, semiprofessional forums, and repositories of problem-solving knowledge.
The extension is still under development, and actively testing for mobile, but I am hopeful that it can substantially help.
